Beautiful Whales

From July to December, the Cape Southern Right Whales come out in force to Walker Bay here in De Kelders each year to mate and give birth. The whales often come right up close to the shore, which makes for the best whale watching in South Africa during this migration period. However, the whales can be seen all year long.

Umnenge lodge provides the perfect whale watching experience - you dont even have to step a foot out of the lodge to see them. Usually they can be seen from the balcony, and we provide binoculars for a close up view.

Whale watching season is the busiest time of the year for the Gansbaai and Hermanus area, and usually we turn away a huge amount of tourists who simply will not find accomodation during this period. The area has a very limited number of guest houses and hotels, and while this creates a tranqil setting and peaceful setting, it means you have to book well in advance to secure a place.
